Description

This milestone, dating from the late 18th century, is a rectangular painted stone post that was re-erected in the mid-20th century. It features an inset panel with an inscription indicating the distances to various settlements along the route of the Preston to Liverpool turnpike from its location in Much Hoole parish. The inscription reads: 'LIVERPOOL 24 ORMSKIRK 11 PRESTON 7 Much Hoole'. This milestone is considered the only surviving example that retains its distance inscription from the Preston to Liverpool turnpike, which was established in the late 18th century.
