Description

Church Farmhouse is a farmhouse dating from the early 17th century, with extensions added in the late 17th century and alterations made in the 18th century. It is now used as a house. The building is constructed of red brick featuring diaper work of vitrified headers and stone quoins, topped with a roof made of stone slates, while the rear has slates. There is one cut-down chimney at the junction and another rebuilt on the ridge. The farmhouse has an L-shaped plan, consisting of a 1½ bay hall part from the early 17th century with an outshut, and a 2-bay projecting crosswing on the left from the late 17th century. It stands two storeys tall, with a door in the front wall next to the wing and another in the left return wall of the wing. The windows are 19th-century casements with 2, 3, and 4 lights, some of which are set under shallow segmental relieving arches. There is evidence of former 3-light mullioned attic windows in both gables of the wing. The two-storey outshut is now continuous but consists of three different builds. Inside, the hall part features an inglenook with a heck and bressummer, quarter-ground moulded beams, and a flagged floor. The parlour has beams with stopped rounded chamfers, and a timber-framed first-floor partition between ranges suggests that it was originally a timber-framed building. Other interior features include batten and board doors, and an 18th-century corner cupboard with fluted pilasters and a dentilled cornice. The building has group value in relation to the nearby church of St. Michael, which is located opposite.
