Description

Mill Hill Cottage is a house dated 1691 that has been extended and altered over time. It is built of brick with stone quoins and has a slate roof with projecting gable eaves. The cottage features one ridge chimney stack and two gable chimneys. The gable end faces the road, and the original plan consisted of two bays, with a third bay added around the mid-19th century.

The house is two storeys high, with stone quoins on the ground floor of the original structure. There is a door to the third bay, a blocked former door on the right side of the second bay with a stone lintel inscribed "HSA ; 1691", and two casement windows to the left of this door on each floor. The rear wall has similar windows in each bay. All ground floor openings have segmental brick heads, while those above are close to the eaves.

In the left gable, there are blocked former windows with brick mullions and hoodmoulds, including one at ground floor and two above. A similar hoodmould is present in the rear wall of the second bay, aligned with the chimney stack. There are also some blocked very small single-light windows at the first floor in both the front and rear walls, which are said to have intact diamond-leaded glazing now concealed.

Inside, the cottage features an inglenook fireplace with a large ovolo-moulded bressummer and a pair of similarly moulded and stopped bridging beams. The first bay contains two service rooms, one of which has stairs with turned balusters and a moulded handrail.
