Description

This is a rectangular gravestone set on a stone base, located 1 metre north of the chancel of the Church of St. Mary in Penwortham. Dated 1682, the surface of the stone is completely covered with lettering in raised capitals. The inscription reads: "HERE:LIETH/THE:BODY:OF/PEETER. SON/OF:IOHN:TAYL/OR:OF:PENWO/RTHAM:INTE/BRED:IULY:THE/16: - 1682:AS.YO/V.ARE.WALKING/SOE. WAS.1.DEA/TH.DID.AREAST/AND- HEARE.I.L/YE.AND.MVST.R/EMAINE. VNTI/LL.THE.IVDGME/NT.DAY.THE. T/RVMPET.SOV/NDS.AND.WIL/LS.ME. HENCE/AWAY."
