Description
Two sets of gravestones date from the late 18th century and are located approximately 5 metres west of the west end of the west tower of the Church of St Peter. The gravestones are made of slate and feature a nowy-arched design. One headstone marks the grave of Honour, daughter of William Burden, who died in 1761 at the age of 3. Below this, there is a shared inscription for John, son of Leonard and Grace Wood, who died in 1786. At the foot of this grave is a well-bedded stone with part of a verse that reads, "Her time was short The Longer is her rest."
The headstone for Mary, wife of William Burden, who died in 1773, has incised crossed bones above the inscription, "Her ways were ways of Pleasantness and all Her Paths were peace." On the reverse side, it records the death of Mary, wife of James Jenn of Horwood, who died in 1812. The stone at the foot of her grave features a representation of an hour-glass flanked by the words "my glass/is run," along with an inscription that states, "Here lies this mortal part of a beloved wife Prudent in all her Conduct Here in Life A tender mother, a faithful Comfort here, Lamented by Her Spouse and Children dear Secure of Peace Her Soul is Gone to Rest in The eternal mansions of the blesst."
