Description

The Fleece Inn, along with an attached cottage and workshop, is located on Liverpool Road in Penwortham. The inn likely dates back to the early 18th century and has undergone significant alterations. The cottage and workshop, which are attached to the right end of the inn, share a roof with it. The building is constructed of brick, roughcast, and painted white on the front and left side, topped with a slate roof featuring a gable chimney and three ridge chimneys.

The structure has a long range of nine bays that exhibit three different building phases, indicated by vertical joints in the rear wall. It is two storeys high, with a black painted cement quoin pattern at the left end and around the main entrance, which is located in the second bay. The inn features five three-light casement windows on each floor, with those at the left end positioned higher and accompanied by a gabled dormer. All windows have painted cement surrounds, with wavy heads on the ground floor.

The cottage has a central door flanked by two sashed windows with glazing bars on each floor. The workshop includes a square window with glazing bars on the first floor, three altered windows, and a wagon door at the back with a wooden lintel and a slightly arched brick head. The rear of the cottage has a board door and a square window next to it, along with a two-light sliding sash window on the first floor. The rear of the inn features various modern extensions. Inside, the inn and its roof have been completely modernized, except for one ovolo moulded beam located in the cellar.
