Description

Old Penwortham Bridge over the River Ribble, located in Preston, is a footbridge built in 1759 from sandstone. It features five unequal segmental arches that rise towards the center, with V-shaped cutwaters that extend to the parapets, creating refuges on both sides of the deck. The spandrels are made of red sandstone, and the parapets have moulded tops, which are splayed at the north end. The east side of the parapet connects to a matching wall that turns at right angles along the north side of the approach ramp from the west. This bridge replaced the first bridge on this site, which was built in 1755 and collapsed in 1756. Until the early 20th century, it was the lowest bridge over the River Ribble and was maintained intermittently by tolls. The southern half of the bridge is located in Penwortham Civil Parish, South Ribble District.
