Description
38 West Cliff is a detached town house, now used as part of offices, built in the mid-19th century and altered since. It is constructed of red brick in Flemish bond, with sandstone dressings and a slate roof. The building has a double-depth, double-fronted plan and stands two storeys over a basement, with an altered attic. The facade is symmetrical with five windows, featuring clasping corner pilasters and a slightly raised center. It has a stone plinth, an interrupted string-course, a plain frieze, and a moulded cornice with a blocking course.
The central feature is a large stone porch made up of panelled square columns and pilasters, set on plinths with steps in between, linked by simple balustrading. The porch is decorated with anthemion and palmette motifs on the caps, and it has a dentilled entablature with an egg-and-dart frieze at the cornice, topped with a parapet. The doorway has a broad shouldered architrave and panelled double doors with an overlight. The windows are 12-pane sashes; the window above the door has a moulded architrave and cornice on consoles, while the others have raised bracketed sills and wedge lintels with raised keystones. The roof includes a 20th-century attic storey and gable chimneys. The left gable features a tall round-headed sashed stair-window with radiating glazing bars, a shorter similar window above, and various 12-pane sashes. There is a 20th-century rear wing on this side. The rear and interior have not been inspected.
