Description
No. 48 West Cliff is a detached town house, now used as offices, built around 1840 and altered since. It is constructed of red brick in Flemish bond, with sandstone dressings and a slate roof. The building has a double-depth plan with side wings and stands two storeys over a basement, plus an added attic storey. The symmetrical facade features three windows and clasping corner pilasters, with flanking one-window wings at a lower level. Notable elements include a stone plinth, a first-floor sill-band, a plain frieze, and a moulded cornice with a blocking course.
The entrance, accessed by four steps, has an Ionic doorcase with engaged columns and an entablature that includes a cornice and blocking course. The door is panelled and has an overlight with margin panes. The ground floor windows have raised sills and wedge lintels, although they were boarded at the time of the survey. The first floor features 12-pane sash windows with wedge lintels, while the wings have similar but smaller windows. The building also has large 20th-century attic storeys and gable chimney stacks. The rear and interior were not inspected.
