Description

19 Spring Bank is a building that includes two townhouses, now functioning as two shops and a house. It was constructed in the 1820s and consists of two separate builds that have been altered over time. The structure is made of red brick in Flemish bond, with sandstone dressings and a slate roof. It has a double-depth plan, with each house being double-fronted. The left house has been partitioned into Nos. 91 and 92, which have a back extension that now includes No. 19 Spring Bank.

The building has two storeys over basements and features three windows on each side, which were originally symmetrical. There is a simple moulded gutter cornice. Each house has a central round-headed doorway accessed by three steps, with gauged brick voussoirs and a wooden doorcase featuring Tuscan semi-columns and a cornice. The doors and fanlights have been altered. No. 93 has sashed windows without glazing bars, all with raised sills and wedge lintels, except for the narrower central window on the first floor. The cellar windows are protected by gratings and surrounded by bar railings with urn finials, which enclose the front area on either side of the door.

The left house, now No. 91, has a corner shop front to the left of the door and a basement barber shop to the right. Its fenestration is similar to No. 93, but the window above the door is a 12-pane sash, and the window to the right has altered glazing. The left return wall features a modern shop window projected from the ground floor, with two windows above. No. 19 Spring Bank extends to the rear, painted white, and has a round-headed door in the centre, two windows at ground floor, and three above, all with altered glazing.
