Description

The Old Farmhouse, located approximately 20 metres north of Cock Hall Farmhouse, dates back to around 1700 and has been altered over time. It is currently derelict and was used as a chicken house in 1984. The building is constructed from coursed sandstone rubble and features a stone slate roof with gable chimneys. It has a T-shaped layout, originally designed as a two-bay baffle-entry plan house with a rear extension.

The farmhouse stands two storeys tall, with the top courses of walls on all sides made from different masonry, possibly indicating that it was raised in the later 18th century. The doorway at the right-hand end has a chamfered surround, large jambstones, and a rectangular lintel, with a blocked rectangular opening above it. The ground floor includes two double-chamfered mullion windows, one with two lights and the other with three lights, the latter featuring a narrower centre light. On the first floor, there are two three-light windows with rectangular flush mullions, although all windows were lacking glazing at the time of the survey. The right return wall has a narrow blocked fire window and a two-light flush mullion window. The rear of the first bay has a ground floor window with a chamfered mullion. The rear extension, which is one bay and two storeys, has a door and a three-light flush mullion window on each floor on the east side.

Inside, the structure is severely damaged, but the first bay features an axial partition wall made of massive flagstones. The front room contains a parlour fireplace with fluted jambs, imposts, a fluted-patterned lintel, and a moulded cornice, while the second bay has a larger but plain fireplace. The Old Farmhouse is a good example of a transitional type of building.
