WHITWORTH, MARKET STREET (West side), Methodist Church

Methodist Church, later C19, with earlier school attached at rear. Rock-faced sandstone with ashlar dressings, slate roof. Rectangular plan, 3 x 6 bays; school continued at angle, 4 small bays. Both 2 storeys, but school only ½ the height. Gable to road: 3-bay symmetrical pedimented facade, with string course, giant rusticated clasping pilasters finished with panels at the top; double 6-panel doors, semicircular fanlight with glazing bars, large moulded and panelled architrave with round-headed arch and keystone, dentilled cornice, plain frieze which forms sill to 1st floor tripartite window: this has round-headed lights, circular lights in the heads, moulded archivolt (with keystones); flanking bays have segmental- headed windows at ground floor, with stilted labels, and round-headed windows at 1st floor. All these windows have glazing bars and margin panes. Pediment has oculus with shaped surround. Side walls have segmental-headed windows at ground floor, round-headed at 1st floor. School to rear is of coursed sandstone, with rectangular windows at ground floor and round-headed windows above.
