Description

The Church of St Mary and All Saints, built in 1829, is the fourth church on this site since the 16th century. It underwent internal alterations between 1903 and 1904. The church is constructed from sandstone blocks and features a low-pitched slate roof. It has a nave with a short extension at the west end, designed in the Early English style. The corners of the building are supported by angle buttresses, topped with distinctive diagonally-set square bellcote turrets that have embattled parapets. The church has five bays and two storeys, with the gable facing the road (east end) showcasing a large stepped triple lancet window. This window is flanked by arched doorways, each with smaller lancets above, and features a moulded sillband that steps up around the doors to form a sill band for the upper windows. The sides of the church have five unusually large lancets with hoodmoulds, which contain two-stage windows likely providing light to the ground floor and galleries. The extension at the west end includes an arched side doorway with a band above it similar to those at the front, as well as a stepped triple lancet window. The interior has not been inspected, but it is noted that all fittings and furnishings were removed in 1903, leaving "nothing remaining save the walls and the roof." This church is classified as a Commissioners' church.
