Description
The Old Baptist Chapel is a Baptist chapel built in 1760, which was enlarged in the early 19th century and restored in 1984. It is constructed from watershot coursed sandstone blocks and features a stone slate roof with gable copings and restored ball finials on the ridge and at the gables. The chapel has a rectangular three-bay plan and is single-depth, with an enlargement at the front. It is two storeys high and has two doorways with plain surrounds and slab canopies supported by beaked brackets. Above and between these doorways are two large 12-pane boxed sash windows set on a continuous sill, with a similar but smaller window at each end on both floors. The return walls display the gable and joint line of the original lower building. The right return wall shows marks of former stone steps in the added wall and has a two-light flush mullion window at the ground floor of the old wall, featuring small panes of old glass in lead cames. The rear of the chapel has three similar windows with 4-pane fixed glazing at the ground floor and four similar windows at the first floor, with the outer windows having been raised within the jambs of the original lower openings. Inside, there is a raised desk with a sounding board that has been restored. The chapel is notable for being largely untouched since the early 19th century and is currently under the guardianship of the Department of the Environment.
