Description
The Former Rakefoot Methodist Church is a Wesleyan Methodist Church built between 1866 and 1867 by Woodhouse of Bolton. The building is currently derelict and constructed of rock-faced sandstone with ashlar dressings and a slate roof. It has a rectangular plan consisting of three by eight bays and features a gable facing the road.
The church is two storeys high and has a symmetrical design, with a pedimented facade that includes channelled pilasters and sill bands on both floors. The ground floor features coupled round-headed doorways with double panelled doors, framed by an architrave of three Tuscan semi-columns in antis. On either side of the doorways are segmental-headed windows with architraves. The first floor has five round-headed windows with archivolts, with the centre three being coupled. The pediment above contains a traceried lunette with a rocaille surround. The return walls have segmental-headed windows on the ground floor and round-headed windows on the first floor, both with coloured margin panes and archivolts.
At the rear of the building, there is a first-floor bridge that connects to the present Rakefoot Methodist Church on York Street. The interior is entirely surrounded by an oval gallery with a panelled front and a stepped floor, supported by slim iron columns with moulded plaster Corinthian capitals. The flat ceiling features deep beams and square panels. All furnishings have been removed, and parts of the building have been damaged since 1984.
