Description
Sunnyside Diocesan Conference Centre is a large house with various constructions of uncertain date, primarily from the late 19th century. It is built of coursed sandstone and features a hipped stone slate roof that is concealed by a parapet, along with several chimneys. The building is arranged in a U-plan with five bays and receding wings.
The symmetrical east-facing facade is designed in the Jacobean style, highlighted by a projecting five-sided two-storey porch and similar two-storey bays topped with corner finials. The porch includes wide Tudor-arched windows with Y-tracery and latticed doors on the left and front sides, with sashed windows above. The present door is located under an arched canopy on the right side. The second and fourth bays each feature a five-light mullion window on both floors, while the polygonal outer bays have similar windows on all sides on both floors.
On the left end, there is an old square-section rainwater spout with three fixing brackets marked "M" and "F," and a large decorated lead tank dated "1695," which are likely from another location. The left return wall includes a large projecting two-storey bay with chamfered corners and a large high-transomed window at the ground floor, along with a similar window in the wall at the rear.
Inside, the building has pendant plaster ceilings in two ground floor rooms of the left wing, and there is ex situ wood panelling and other features said to be from Whalley Abbey.
