Description

The Crawshawbooth War Memorial is a First World War memorial built in 1920 and relocated in 2010. It was created by HA Paley of Austin and Paley for the Brooks family and includes additional names from the Second World War. The memorial is made of buff sandstone and has a hexagonal shape, standing on three hexagonal steps.

The design features a fleury cross with a laurel-wreath wheel-head and a slender, tapering, chamfered shaft. The hexagonal base is decorated with blind tracery. Each side of the base has a panel framed by columns and a cusped round arch, with an inscribed band above that rises from a chamfered plinth. The band is inscribed in relief with Gothic lettering, which reads:

THEY COUNTED/ NOT THEIR LIVES/ DEAR UNTO/ THEMSELVES -/ THEIR REWARD/ IS SURE

Four of the panels display carved inscriptions in relief, listing the names of 24 Fallen soldiers in alphabetical order, with six names on each panel. Some names are worn and difficult to read. One panel features a relief carving of a garlanded laurel wreath, while another panel bears the carved dedication in relief, which reads:

ERECTED/ IN HONOUR OF/ THE MEMBERS OF/ ST: JOHN’S CH:/ WHO FELL/ IN THE WAR/ 1914 – 1918

Beneath this dedication, the upper face of the plinth is incised with the dates of the Second World War. The other five faces of the memorial display the names of nine Fallen soldiers from that conflict, also listed in alphabetical order.
