Description

Pinner Lane Cottage is a cottage, probably built in the late 18th century. It is constructed from watershot coursed sandstone and has a stone slate roof with a chimney on the ridge and another at the south-west corner. The cottage is situated on an unusual site near the top of the steep ravine of Pinner Clough, over a small conduit.

The building has a double-depth, two-bay plan and stands two storeys high with an attic. There is a plain doorway in the east gable wall, with a stepped triple-light window on each side, another above, and a 2-light mullioned window in the apex. The side walls feature similar triple-light windows: on the north side, there is one at ground floor and two above, while the south side has two at first floor. The west gable end includes a low fixed window, a low lean-to covering a small archway of uncertain purpose, and a small attic window.

Inside, the plan is little disturbed, with the principal ground floor rooms separated by a central chimney stack and a staircase at the rear leading to the upper floor chambers. Flanking the staircase at ground floor level are small service rooms, one containing an in-situ slop stone and the other with a slop stone and a small water copper or boiler. The principal ground floor hearth retains a range and overmantle shelf, with built-in cupboards to the left-hand side.
