Description
The Spewing Duck is a public well of spring water located in Goodshaw Fold, Rawtenstall, and was constructed in 1855 to replace an earlier well. The well is made of stone and features a rectangular stone tank. It has a restored rectangular stone reredos with a carved head, which replaces the original "Celtic" head, and this head issues spring water through a pipe into a semi-circular bowl below. The structure is topped with a solid triangular lintel that bears the inscription: "ERECTED/BY/SUBSCRIPTION BY THE/INHABITANTS/and the/EXORS OF THE LATE/JOHN HARGREAVES ESQ A.D. 1855". The name "Spewing Duck" comes from the previous well, which had a curved pipe resembling a duck's neck, and the water flow was irregular, coming in fits and starts.
