Description
The Old Bridge, located approximately 10 metres south-east of the Dog Pits Lane bridge over the River Irwell, is a small bridge whose date is unknown but is likely from the 18th century or earlier. It features a single low segmental arch made of sandstone rubble, although the voussoirs on the south-east side are now missing. The bridge is connected to a short retaining wall on the west side of the south bank. Its position suggests it was part of a pre-turnpike route that crossed the Irwell, linking Bacup Old Road to the west with Todmorden Old Road to the east. This route has since been replaced by the current bridge and is now overgrown.
