Description

Broadclough Mill is an early 19th-century woollen mill that was enlarged in 1835 and converted to cotton spinning, with the date 1835 inscribed on the keystone of a door. The mill is now occupied by various trades. It is constructed of coursed sandstone with slate roofs and features a brick chimney at the rear. The building is a rectangular three-storey block that is seven windows long, with a two-storey engine house attached at the left end, which has a gabled roof facing the road and a square brick chimney with steel tie-bands at the rear.

The structure is plain, with rectangular windows that have stone sills and altered glazing. At the left end of the main block, there is a round-headed doorway with plain stone jambs and imposts, large voussoirs, and a projecting keystone that bears the incised lettering "J + L" for John Lord. The fanlight above the door, dating from 1835, features white glass lettering from around 1930 that reads "DW & S" for David Whitehead & Sons Ltd. The gable wall of the engine house has a depressed-arch wagon entrance, with one window on each side and three larger windows above.

Inside, the mill comprises seven bays supported by two rows of iron columns and wooden beams. Historically, it was a water-powered woollen mill by 1824, transitioned to steam power by 1830 with a 32 horsepower engine, and was used for cotton spinning by the 1840s. The building was converted for multiple occupations in 1970.
