Description
The Old Grammar School is an adult education centre that was originally built as a grammar school in 1725. It was extended in the early 19th century and altered, likely in the mid-to-late 19th century. The building is constructed from sandstone rubble and features a hipped stone slate roof. It has two storeys.
The east facade consists of two bays on either side of a central two-storey gabled porch. The cross windows are rebated and chamfered, and each has a hood. The right-hand ground-floor window has been altered to accommodate a doorway. The porch includes a cross window on the first floor, above which is a blank shield within a plaque. The door surround, which is moulded in a Tudor arch style, dates from the 19th century.
On the left-hand return wall, which faces south, there are five bays with cross windows that have linked hoods. The central bay on the first floor is blank, while the remaining windows on this facade are of an early 19th-century style, featuring sash windows with glazing bars and plain stone surrounds. Inside the building, there are no visible features of architectural interest.
