Description
Whalley War Memorial, built in 1921, was designed by the architect Percy Worthington. It is made of sandstone and features a tall, tapering cross shaft with a gabled head above a relief of Christ. This stands on a heavy square base that lists the names of the World War I fatalities from the village. In front of the cross is an open book that commemorates the World War II and later fatalities. The memorial is situated at the top of steps within a landscaped area in front of the Grade II-listed Royal Grammar School.
The parish council initiated a war memorial appeal in January 1919, and by November of that year, Worthington's design was accepted, inspired by the medieval cross at Madeley in Herefordshire. The construction cost was £800, and the memorial was unveiled by General Shoubridge in September 1921. It was later adapted and re-dedicated in November 1948. This memorial is an elegant example of its kind and has group value with the school behind it, contributing to its prominent civic presence.
