Description
High Halstead is a house dating from 1687, as indicated by a plaque. It is constructed of slobbered rubble and has a slate roof, standing two storeys tall. The south gable features a sashed window on the first floor, which lacks glazing bars and has a plain stone surround. Below this window is a former door surround that has been converted into a window; the moulding of the jambs extends around an elaborately shaped lintel, which includes a central pendant ornament with two scrolls and a ball. Above the lintel and the date plaque, there is a moulded and decorated hood. The first floor projects on a decorated string course that returns on the right-hand wall, featuring sections of gadroon decoration, each adorned with a central 'Celtic' head.
On the east wall, there is a 19th-century single-storey porch. To the south of the porch, there is a one-light window on each floor, both with ovolo moulding and cyma moulded hoods. The ground-floor window has a segmental head, while the first-floor window has a shaped head. North of the porch, in the east wall, there is an enlarged window with one mullion and remnants of a double-chamfered surround. The first floor also has the remains of a double-chamfered surround, with a plain stone surround to the left. Inside the house, there are reportedly no 17th-century features.
