Description

The Church of St. Bartholomew, formerly known as Houghton Chapel, is a parish church dating from the mid-to-late 18th century, with restoration work completed in 1873. It is built from squared watershot sandstone and features a stone slate roof. The structure includes a nave and chancel under a continuous roof, along with a south porch.

The south wall displays projecting quoins and consists of three bays to the right of the porch and one to the left. The windows are framed with plain stone surrounds and have semi-circular heads. The gabled porch is adorned with coping and a cross finial, and features clasping pilasters. Both the outer and inner doors of the porch have plain stone surrounds, semi-circular heads, projecting imposts, and stepped keystones.

The gables of the church are finished with copings; the eastern gable has a cross finial, while the western gable features an open stone bellcote, likely added in 1873, which is square in section and broached to a small stone spire topped with a cross. The north wall consists of two bays with windows that also have plain stone surrounds and semi-circular heads. The east wall is notable for its Venetian window, which has a plain stone surround and square mullions.

Inside, the church contains four boxed kingpost trusses. An octagonal sandstone font is inscribed with the words: '...(K)NOW THAT ALL CHILDREN BAPTISED HEARE GOD GAVE THEM GOOD LIVES TO LEAD THE ETERNAL GOD TO FEARE. 1619 RF'.
