Description
The Church of St John Evangelist, built in 1838, is a Grade II listed church located in Chaigley, Hurst Green. It is constructed from rock-faced sandstone and features a slate roof. The church consists of a nave and chancel that share a continuous roof, along with a tower that partially projects from the west wall and a south porch.
The north and south walls each have five bays, supported by buttresses and adorned with chamfered lancet windows topped with hoods. The east window is composed of three chamfered lancets, although their sills have been raised. The west wall of the tower includes a triple lancet window on the ground floor, while the upper section of the tower features lancet bell openings and an oversailing battlemented parapet.
The porch is designed with chamfered surrounds for both the inner and outer doors, which have two-centred heads. Inside, the church has a shallow chancel and an open timber roof with a low pitch, supported by trusses that include king posts and scissor braces.
