Description
CHERRY BURTON MAIN STREET SE 94 SE (south side) 4/18 Church of Saint Michael 7.2.68 II Church. 1852-3 by Horace Jones. Decorated style. Rock-faced sandstone ashlar with limestone dressings, slate roofs. 3-stage west tower, 4 bay nave with north aisle and north porch, 2-bay chancel. West tower: moulded plinth, buttresses with offsets; polygonal stair turret to north-west corner with shouldered door to ground floor. First floor: trefoil-headed window beneath clock-face. String course. 2 pointed belfry openings with trefoil heads below quatrefoil under a running hoodmould and relieving arch. Ball flower to cornice, crenellated parapet. Nave: chamfered plinth, buttress with offsets. 3 trefoiled lancets under hoodmoulds. 3 quatrefoils to clerestory. North porch: pointed opening of 2 orders on nook-shafts with foliage capitals, all under hoodmould. Raised gable with cross finial. Two 2-light pointed windows with geometrical tracery under hoodmoulds with face stops to south wall. Chancel: moulded plinth, buttress with offsets. Single trefoil-headed lancet under hoodmould with face stops to right, similar paired lancets to left. Pointed 3-light east window with geometrical tracery under hoodmould with face stops: a monarch to left, a bishop to right. Similar fenestration to south wall. Interior: north nave arcade of 4 bays: pointed double-chamfered arches with hoodmoulds on cylindrical piers with moulded bases. Similar chancel arch on column corbels. Tall double-chamfered tower arch. 5-sided stone pulpit with carved panels depicting the Paschal lamb beneath an angel holding a riband to centre and the symbols of the 4 Evangelists to either side. Cornice with carved foliage. Chancel north and south windows have mid-wall shafts and hoodmoulds to rere-arches with leaf carving. Font: circular tub on octagonal pier with moulded base.
