Description
This is an ornamental fountain located in a circular pond, approximately 65 meters southeast of the Derby monument in Miller Park, Preston. It was likely built around 1865. The pond has a diameter of about 20 meters and features a moulded sandstone ashlar rim. At the center of the pond is the fountain, designed in an imitation stone and Longridge stone, with a Greek cross plan. It has a two-step base that is channelled to mimic water-wear. On this base stands a large pedestal adorned with four female figures representing Earth, Air, Fire, and Water, seated in inverted brackets. The spaces between the figures are filled with designs of a shell, rush, and trident, and the entire structure is topped with a large shell-like basin.
