Description
No. 8 East Cliff is a detached town house, now serving as an education centre and offices, built around 1835 and altered since. The building is constructed of red brick in Flemish bond, with sandstone dressings and a slate roof. It has a double-depth, double-fronted plan and stands two storeys over a basement. The symmetrical facade features three windows, a plinth, a first-floor band, and prominent projecting eaves. The doorway is framed by a doorcase with coupled pilasters and an entablature that has a dentilled cornice, leading to a panelled door with an overlight that includes vertical glazing bars. All windows are 16-pane sashes with raised sills and flat-arched heads. The roof has projected verges and gable chimneys, while the side walls include roundel windows in the gables. The south front features two segmental three-window bows that extend below the eaves, each with a plain frieze above and sashed windows on both floors. Inside, there is a dog-legged staircase with stick balusters and a mahogany handrail with a wreathed curtail. An additional two-storey wing has been added to the east side.
