Description
The railway bridge over the drive between Avenham Park and Miller Park was built around 1846 for the Blackburn and Preston Railway Company, with Sturges Meek as the resident engineer. Constructed from sandstone ashlar, the bridge features a single span that is slightly skewed and is designed in a classical style. It has a semi-elliptical arch made of rusticated rock-faced voussoirs, with rusticated terminal pilasters and a plain band. The balustraded parapet includes a shield at its center, and the soffit is made of winding rusticated masonry, supported by curved rock-faced abutments. Historically, this bridge carried the former East Lancashire Railway line over the drive between the parks. It was an essential part of the landscaping requirements set by the railway company as Preston Corporation began developing Avenham Park in the mid-1840s.
