Description
The Central Fountain in Derby Arboretum is a fountain built in 1850 by R Blore of Derby. It is made of cast iron and stone, featuring a large circular basin with moulded ashlar walling and a rendered pond lining. The fountain is supported on a square stone base, which has a broad lower cast iron basin with a gadrooned lip. At the center, a circular shaft with foliate decoration supports a smaller upper cast iron basin that contains a triple-decker central fountain spout. The Derby Arboretum, where the fountain is located, was designed by J C Loudon and laid out between 1839 and 1840, with an extension in 1845. It was the first park specifically designed for and owned by the public, emerging from the Movement for Public Walks. The Arboretum is also listed on the Gardens Register at grade II*.
