Description

Reginald Street Baths, built in 1904, was designed by architect John Ward, the Borough Surveyor. The building is in the Jacobean style, constructed from brick with stone bands and dressings. It has two tall storeys, featuring a three-bay centre flanked by projecting wings. The centre includes a two-storey central bowed stone mullioned and transomed window on each floor, topped by a cornice that extends across the front and a decorative bowed parapet. On either side of the bow are decorative stone doorways, each with three-light mullioned windows above them. Rising above the recessed centre is a wide and tall decorative gable with stone coping and a crowning feature topped by an arched cornice.

At the base of the gable, there are a pair of three-light windows and a central projecting clock on a bracket. The wings contain two two-light stone mullioned windows with decorative cornice tops and a single similar window on the first floor. The parapet features raised corners and large ornamental lanterns supporting domes with lofty finials. To the right, there is a contemporary one-storey wing set back. Decorative iron railings and forecourt piers are present on both sides.

The original interior is well-preserved, featuring a grand staircase with a freestanding flight, iron railings, and ramped curved handrails leading to an open gallery with railings and a squat columned screen with an arched centre. The Swimming Hall contains a large bath, tiled walls, and a bronze iron-railed gallery on three sides. The Turkish Bath features marble walls and an inward-curving screen with three Islamic arches. There is also a marble and tiled walled rest room that includes similar Islamic styled details, such as windows and doors.
