Description
The shelter, or garden pavilion, located to the north of the entrance lodge to Derby Arboretum, was built around 1850 and is likely designed by Henry Duesbury of Derby. It is constructed from red brick with painted ashlar dressings and is a single-storey structure. The building features a plain ashlar plinth and a moulded ashlar cornice with brackets.
The western front has a broad segmental arch with a keystone, supported by square stone columns that have decorative capitals and moulded bases. On either side of this arch are single round-headed arches with low panelled walls and tall spear railings. The parapet is topped with an ashlar cartouche and shield.
Derby Arboretum, where this shelter is located, was laid out between 1839 and 1840 by J C Loudon and was extended in 1845. It was the first park specifically designed for and owned by the public, emerging from the Movement for Public Walks. The Arboretum is also listed on the Gardens Register at grade II*.
