Description

Nos. 20 and 22 Lancaster Road is a commercial building, likely originally designed as shops with living spaces above, dating from around the mid-1850s and has been altered over time. The structure is built of painted brick with stucco decoration and features a slate roof. It has a rectangular plan that includes a carriage entry on the left side.

The building is designed in a classical style and stands three storeys tall with an attic, comprising three bays. The first bay is narrower due to the carriage entry, while the central bay projects slightly forward and is adorned with giant coupled pilasters and pilaster fillets on the outer bays. It has a moulded frieze and a prominent cornice with modillions and a blocking course.

The ground floor features 20th-century shop fronts, while the upper floors have windows with moulded architraves. The central window on the first floor has a pediment supported by consoles, although its glazing has been altered. To the left, there is a four-pane sash window with a plain cornice, while the right window has been altered. The second floor windows have shouldered architraves, with the central and left windows being four-pane sashes, and the right window altered. The roof includes two glazed dormer windows and has corniced chimneys.

The interior has not been inspected. This building is part of a block that includes Nos. 10, 12, and 14 on one side and Nos. 16 and 18 on the other, with No. 24, known as The Stanley Arms, located to the left.
