Description
This milestone, located on the west side of the road at the north side of the entrance to the County Fire Brigade headquarters, dates from the mid to late 18th century. It is a convex triangular stone approximately 1 metre high, featuring a rounded top and a recessed panel on each of its two sides facing the road. The panels are lettered in cursive script, indicating the distances: "To Garstang 7¾ Miles" and "To Preston 3 Miles," with "BROUGHTON" inscribed on the base beneath the panels. This milestone was erected by the Preston and Garstang Turnpike Trust, which was established in 1751, and it is one of ten such milestones that remain in an unbroken sequence.
