Description
This barn, located approximately 25 metres south of Higher Stanalee Cottage, is likely from the 17th century. It features a cruck frame and is clad in coursed sandstone rubble with barge quoins. The barn has a steeply-pitched roof covered with corrugated iron over thatch, and includes bargeboarding. It consists of three bays, with a lean-to addition at the right end. The central area has full-height double wagon doors, while the first bay has a doorway and the third bay has a blocked doorway, both with large jambstones and rectangular lintels. The right gable wall, above the lean-to, reveals exposed cruck blades in the masonry. The left gable wall has a modern lean-to made of concrete blocks. The rear wall shows ragged vertical joints that indicate the former position of a rear wagon entrance, and to the right of this entrance is a massive padstone and a small square window. Inside, there are two full cruck trusses; the first has a tie, collar, and yoke, while the second is similar but has the tie severed at the blades and features dorsals. The rear blade carries trenched scarf-jointed purlins with curved windbraces above and below. The truss incorporated in the gable wall also has a tie, collar, and yoke, along with windbracing, and the interior includes rafters, laths, and remnants of roof thatch.
