Description

The Old Blacksmith's Shop, located approximately 30 metres east of Basin Bridge, is a blacksmith's shop and dwelling built around 1800. It has been extended in the 19th century and restored around 1991. Originally constructed to serve the Lancaster Canal Company, the building features coursed sandstone rubble and a slate roof, with chimneys on the original gables.

The structure has a rectangular plan that runs parallel to the towpath. The western part consists of a two-storey blacksmith's shop with a dwelling above and a stable in an extension to the left. This section has three bays on each floor, with the west gable wall displaying three windows on both levels, featuring recent 36-pane top-hung casements, and a doorway in the right-hand corner. The facade facing the towpath includes a window to the left and a doorway to the right on the ground floor, along with two windows and a central doorway on the first floor. The entrance is accessed via a prominent flight of stone steps, which is rectangular in shape and protected by iron bar railings.

The extension to the east has a wide blocked doorway with a concrete lintel, and a new window opening was being created at the time of the survey. The lower eastern portion contains three windows and a waggon entrance. Inside, the upper floor has been removed except for the principal beams, and two original fireplaces are visible on the first floor.
