Description
The entrance lodge at Ripley St Thomas School was built in 1885 by the architectural firm Paley and Austin. It is constructed from snecked sandstone rubble and features a slate roof. The building is designed in an L-shape, with a gabled cross-wing on the left side. It has one storey with an attic.
The cross-wing includes a single-storey, six-light stone bowed window topped with a coped parapet. The attic is illuminated by a three-light mullioned window with blind trefoil heads. The main section of the lodge has a three-light double-chamfered mullioned window. To the left, at the junction with the cross-wing, there is an open porch that has a slated lean-to roof supported by timber posts, two of which are turned. The posts are connected at the top by flat timber ogee arches and there is a low timber balustrade. The doorway features moulded stone jambs and a shaped lintel inscribed with the date '1885'. Both gables are topped with copings, and there are chimneys with clustered shafts on the left and at the rear towards the right.
