Description
The entrance gateway at Ripley St Thomas School, built around 1860 and probably designed by J Cunningham, is made of sandstone ashlar with some polygonal masonry above the archways. It features four piers, with the inner piers flanking the driveway and connected to the outer piers by pointed archways that serve as pedestrian entrances. These archways are topped with steep coped gables adorned with fleur-de-lys finials, which rise from weathered set-backs in the main piers. The piers themselves have eight-sided stone caps with poppyhead finials. The wrought-iron gates, which appear to be original, include decorative scrolls and trefoiled arches.
