Description

South Lodge, likely built in the 1830s by George Webster, serves as the entrance to Whittington Hall. It is constructed from sandstone rubble and features a slate roof. The building is one storey high with an attic. The north-east wall, which faces the drive, has one bay on each side of a central projection topped with a steep gable. The windows here are chamfered and consist of two lights divided by a transom. The central projection includes a studded door with strap hinges set in a chamfered surround with a triangular head, above which is a blank square recess.

On the south-east wall, facing the road, there is a gabled projection that features a canted bay window with coping. This window has mullions and transoms, with six lights at the front and two lights on each canted side. To the left, there is one bay that includes a timber attic dormer with shaped bargeboards. All gables are adorned with copings. The chimneys, which have paired shafts, are located on the left-hand gable and to the left of the gabled projection.

The adjoining gate piers are made of sandstone ashlar, octagonal in shape, and topped with moulded caps and ball finials. They are flanked by concave walls with copings, with the left-hand wall connecting to the lodge.
