Description
Newton Hall is a house that was likely rebuilt in the 1880s, possibly by the architectural firm Paley and Austin. It is constructed of sandstone rubble and features mainly slate roofs. The building has two storeys, with the main front facing south-east. This front includes a projecting wing on the left and a gabled projection on the right, with a two-storey porch situated between them. Above the ground-floor windows, there is a drip course, and both the porch and the right-hand projection extend over this course.
The windows are mullioned, with some being chamfered and others rebated and chamfered. Their arrangement is not entirely regular due to the conversion of an earlier house. To the left of the porch, there are windows with two and four lights, and on the first floor, there are three windows with two lights. To the right, there is one bay featuring a cross window on the ground floor and a two-light window above. The right-hand gabled projection has three adjacent cross windows on the ground floor and a four-light window above.
The right-hand return wall of the left-hand wing has a four-light window on each floor, with the first-floor window located under a gable. The first-floor window of the porch consists of three lights. The chamfered doorway is topped with a carved shield of arms and is enclosed by a hood. The gables are adorned with copings and finials, and there are chimneys on the right-hand gable and the gable of the left-hand wing, along with additional chimneys to the right of the porch and between the porch and the left-hand wing.
On the west side of the house, a moulded door architrave with a lintel inscribed '16 ONI 78' has been re-set and is now used as a window. Additionally, a stone inscribed '1886 NNA' is set into the west wall of a rear wing. Inside, there is a fireplace with a wooden surround in a 17th-century style, dated '1886'. A room in the west-side projecting wing features built-in cupboards made from re-used panelling, which includes inscriptions: 'NB 1600', 'IB 1712', and 'RF 1650'.
