Description
Yew Tree Cottage and Yew Tree House are two houses from the late 17th century located on Silverdale Road in Yealand Redmayne. The buildings are pebbledashed and topped with slate roofs, standing two storeys high with attics.
Yew Tree House, at No. 23 to the north, features an open-fronted porch supported by two sandstone flags, which partially covers a 4-centred doorhead with a hood mould. The doorway has chamfered jambs and retains its original 17th-century front door, complete with studs and strap hinges. To the left of the porch are two modern windows with plain stone reveals, and a modern window with plain reveals is situated to the right. On the first floor, there are three sash windows with plain reveals. The attic includes a central stone-gabled dormer that has a 4-light rebated and chamfered mullioned window with a hood mould.
Yew Tree Cottage, at No. 21 to the south, consists of a single unit with a wooden porch. To the left of the porch is a window with plain reveals and a limestone lintel, while a sash window with glazing bars is located to the right. The first floor features a similar window. Both houses have chimneys on their gables and between them, with the north chimney displaying a wooden corbelled frame near the apex, linked to the firehood. The north gable also has a one-light chamfered attic window. There is a later wing at the rear of the buildings.
Inside, the north room contains a massive cambered tie beam with blocked brace slots, repurposed as a firehood bressumer. This beam has a mortise for a heck post and remnants of the top rail of a spere.
