Description
The Yealand War Memorial is located on the west side of Footeran Lane, opposite the Primary School, marking the boundary between the parishes of Yealand Conyers and Yealand Redmayne. It is enclosed on the west side by a semi-circular drystone wall, and the area is cobbled.
Constructed from local stone, the tall memorial features a Latin cross with splayed ends, set on a tapering shaft. The front face of the cross is slightly recessed. The shaft rises from an irregular stone plinth, which is positioned on a square, two-stepped base. At the front of the memorial, on the bottom step, there is a small stone flower holder.
The enclosure wall contains irregularly-shaped stones with inscriptions carved in relief. On the left side, there are four names; in the upper center, it reads "IN MEMORY OF OUR GLORIOUS DEAD/ 1914-1919"; in the lower center, it notes "1939 – 1945" followed by two names; and on the right side, there are three names.
Additionally, a circular stone plaque on the front of the plinth is inscribed with "IN/ MEMORY OF/ LIVES LOST/ 1914-18 – 1939-45/ AND/ HOPE/ FOR ETERNAL/ PEACE." This dedication is surrounded by the names of the parishes carved in low relief.
