Description
31, 33, and 35 Sun Street is a row of three houses, now used as offices, dating from around 1800 and altered in the 20th century. The buildings are constructed of sandstone ashlar with slate roofs, featuring a coped gable on the southern side. Nos. 31 and 33 have double-depth plans with linked recessed doorways that are accessed by three steps and face west. No. 35 is only one room deep, has a single bay facing west, and features a gabled double-fronted facade facing south with a central doorway. The chimney stacks are located on the north gable and on the party wall between Nos. 33 and 35. The row consists of three storeys above cellars, set on a plinth, with three bays facing west under a plain eaves cornice; the first two bays belong to Nos. 31 and 33, while the third bay lights the side of No. 35. The south gable is pedimented and has a round-headed attic window above a band that continues the line of the stone box gutter on the front. All openings have plain reveals. The doorways to Nos. 31 and 33 were remodeled in 1988 and feature doors with six raised panels and overlights, along with re-entrant corners and a cornice supported by plain consoles, similar to the doorway of No. 35. All windows are sashed with glazing bars, providing either 12 or 9 panes, except for the lower sashes on the ground floor. The windows on the right-hand gable are blind, blocked with stone slabs in two planes, originally painted to resemble 16-pane sashes. Historically, No. 35 was marked as the Town Clerk's Office on the 1845 Ordnance Survey map.
