Description
22 and 24 Sun Street are a pair of small houses built in the late 18th century, with alterations made in the 19th and 20th centuries. They are constructed from coursed roughly squared sandstone with ashlar dressings and feature slate roofs. The houses have a double-depth plan with linked doorways in the center, side rear extensions, and gable chimney stacks. They rise three storeys above cellars, with one bay for each house.
Both houses have plain surrounds for their doorways and windows, with doors made up of six raised and fielded panels. No. 24, located on the left, has a first-floor sashed window without glazing bars and a 20th-century fixed frame on the ground floor that is similarly divided. No. 22 features a glazing bar sash on the ground floor and a 20th-century casement with glazing bars on the first floor. Both houses have glazing bar sashes with horns on the second floor. The rear of the properties includes two full-height stair windows positioned in the center.
These houses were likely constructed shortly after the establishment of Sun Street, which was laid out in 1791 on the garden of the Sun Inn located on Church Street.
