Description
The Church of St Mary is a Roman Catholic church built in 1820, constructed from sandstone rubble and featuring a hipped slate roof. The east wall has a gabled porch that projects slightly, which includes a Venetian opening with a door flanked by windows. On either side of the porch, corbels support stone busts; the left bust is of Emperor Constantine, while the right bust is of King Oswald of Northumbria. Inside, the church has a flat ceiling, with the nave and chancel separated by two Tuscan columns and two attached columns. Behind the altar, there are two half-columns and two quarter-columns, which may have originated from an 18th-century chapel at Claughton that was dismantled to provide stone for this church. Dr. John Lingard, who authored the History of England, served as the priest at Hornby from 1811 to 1851 and was instrumental in the construction of the current church.
