Description

CLAYTON-LE-MOORS CLAYTON HALL DRIVE SD 73 SE 3/57 Ice house, c.30 metres south of lane, and c.75 metres east of Clayton Hall Farmhouse - - II

Ice house to former Clayton Hall, probably late C18. Flat-topped mound c.2 metres high, enclosed by stone wall, adjoining west wall of old walled garden; parallel to wall is a sloped porch covering steps which descend with a turn, to a segmentally vaulted passage with recesses in the side wall; this leads to a vaulted cellar c.5 metres long and c.4 metres wide, separated from the passage by a raised ½-height doorway which has hinges for outer door and rebate for inner door.
