Description
The ice house, located approximately 30 metres south of the lane and about 75 metres east of Clayton Hall Farmhouse, dates from the late 18th century and was associated with the former Clayton Hall. It features a flat-topped mound about 2 metres high, enclosed by a stone wall, which is adjacent to the west wall of an old walled garden. Alongside the wall, there is a sloped porch that covers steps descending with a turn into a segmentally vaulted passage. This passage contains recesses in the side wall and leads to a vaulted cellar that measures approximately 5 metres long and 4 metres wide. The cellar is separated from the passage by a raised half-height doorway, which has hinges for an outer door and a rebate for an inner door.
