Description

Nos. 13, 13A, and 14 on East Beach are a pair of marine villas built around 1840, with some alterations. They are constructed from brown brick in Flemish bond, featuring sandstone dressings and a slate roof. Each house has a double-depth plan and is single-fronted, with adjoining entrance halls and coupled back extensions.

The villas rise three storeys and have a symmetrical arrangement of windows, with two windows on either side of a central two-window section that slightly projects forward. This central section is accented by corner pilasters, a plain frieze, a moulded cornice, and a blocking course. The doorways are located in the centre and feature doorcases with engaged Tuscan columns, plain entablatures, and moulded cornices, though the doors have been altered. The doorway for No. 14 includes rectangular overlights with geometrical glazing bars. The flanking bays have stone two-storey canted bay windows, which include panels between floors and moulded cornices with blocking courses. The other windows have raised sills, and the two first-floor windows above the doors have wedge lintels, although all windows have altered glazing.

The villas have gable chimneys and a central chimney on the front slope. They resemble townhouses that seem out of place by the seaside, contrasting sharply with the other marine villas in Lytham. They form a group with the adjoining No. 14A and are part of a significant mid-19th century seaside development of villas and boarding houses.
