LYTHAM ST ANNES Lytham EAST BEACH (north side) Nos.13, 13A AND 14

(Formerly listed as Nos.13, 13A AND 14, CENTRAL BEACH (north side), previously listed as: EAST BEACH, Lytham (North side) Nos.13 AND 14)

GV II Pair of marine villas. c.1840, altered. Brown brick in Flemish bond, with sandstone dressings and slate roof. Double-depth plan, each house single-fronted, entrance halls-adjoining and with coupled back extensions.

Three storeys, 2+2 windows (arranged 1:2:1), symmetrical, the two-window centre breaking forwards slightly, with corner pilasters, plain frieze, moulded cornice, and blocking course. The doorways in the centre have doorcases of engaged Tuscan columns with plain entablatures and moulded cornices, and altered doors with rectangular overlights (that to No.14 with geometrical glazing bars). The flanking bays have stone two storey canted bay windows, with panels between floors and moulded cornices with blocking courses; the other windows have raised sills, and the two at first floor above the doors have wedge lintels, but all these windows have altered glazing. Gable chimneys and a central chimney on the front slope.

Essentially a pair of town houses, as if transported from the industrial town of Preston and set down incongruously by the seaside, in striking contrast with most other marine villas in Lytham.

Forms group with No.14A adjoining to the right (q.v.), and part of a noteworthy mid-C19 seaside development of villas and boarding houses.
