Description

This is a cruck-framed barn, likely dating from the 16th century, located approximately 50 metres northeast of Heskin Old Hall Farmhouse. The barn features a high plinth made of thin sandstone rubble, with red brick cladding on the west side and corrugated asbestos sheets on the north gable and east side. The upper part of the gable is finished with weatherboarding, and the roof is primarily covered with corrugated asbestos sheets, with some slate on the east side.

While the exterior is of lesser interest, the interior is notable for containing five full cruck trusses, including one in the north gable. From this end, the first three trusses have spurs to the wall post, severed tie-beams, collars, yokes, and dorsals with windbracing to two pairs of purlins. The fourth and fifth trusses lack dorsals, and the gable truss features angle struts and once had a contemporary owl-house. The two northern bays have wall plates, as does the east side wall. Some carpenters' marks are visible, such as "S4" and "49" on the second truss. The barn is associated with the former Heskin Old Hall, which is said to have been built in the late 16th century but was demolished around 1800. A stone-built shippon has been added at the south end.
