Description

HESKIN HALFPENNY LANE SD 51 NW 9/131 Barn c.50 metres north-east - of Heksin Old Hall Farmhouse - II

Cruck-framed barn, probably C16, altered. High plinth of thin sandstone rubble, cladding of red brick (west side) and corrugated asbetos sheet (north gable and east side), the upper part of the gable finished with weather boarding, roof mostly corrugated asbestos sheet with some slate on east side. Exterior of less interest than the interior, which contains 5 full cruck trusses, including one in the north gable; from this end the first 3 trusses have spurs to the wall post, tie-beams (severed), collars, yokes, and dorsals with windbracing to 2 pairs of purlins; the 4th and 5th lack dorsals; the gable truss has angle struts, and formerly had a contemporary owl-house; the 2 north bays have wall plates and on the east side wall also. Some carpenters' marks visible e.g. on 2nd truss marks like "S4" and "49". Associated with former Heskin Old Hall, said to be late C16 but pulled down c.1800. Stone built shippon added at south end.
