Description
This is a cruck-framed barn and shippon located approximately 10 metres northeast of Old Hall Farmhouse. It likely dates from the 16th century but has been reconstructed at a later date. The structure features modern walls and a roof made of common brick with a translucent corrugated sheet. It has a rectangular plan and is two storeys high, with a loft throughout.
The west side wall is made of common brick and incorporates applied timbers that indicate the position of the principal internal structures. It has various openings that are of little interest. The south gable and east side wall appear to be made of 18th-century brick, with the south gable displaying a simple relief pattern featuring two boar heads and two shuttles, which likely represent the Barton and Shuttleworth families.
Inside, the barn has a composite frame consisting of four full cruck trusses and two principal rafter trusses, arranged in the sequence A, B, A, B, A, A from north to south. The cruck trusses feature collars that run out as spurs to support dorsals and yokes, while the other trusses have upper and lower collars.
